General Prenatal Health Questions
What about exercise during pregnancy?
You are encouraged to keep active and participate in activities you normally
enjoy during your pregnancy. Avoid contact sports or activities where
injury to the abdomen may occur. You may find that you have less strength
and energy than before you became pregnant. Exercise is still good for
you. Your heartbeat should not exceed 140 beats per minute. We recommend
that you walk briskly a minimum of 20 minutes three to five times per
week. Other exercise such as swimming, low impact aerobics, and stationary
bike riding are also good forms of exercise. Choose exercise shoes
that feel secure and help your balance. You may want to use an athletic
bra for more support during your workouts. Your body is working hard helping
your baby grow 24 hours a day. Put your feet up with pride. This allows
any swelling of your ankles to go down. Learn

If I have a job, should I stop working?
Generally, you can work right up until the end of your pregnancy. We can
write a letter to your employer giving your due date. Unless there is
a specific problem with your pregnancy, we cannot excuse you from work
other than for scheduled appointments.
Can I travel during pregnancy?
Yes. There are generally no problems with riding in a plane or taking
auto trips. Remember to drink fluids and allow breaks for walking and
stretching. We do not recommend traveling during the last month of pregnancy,
in the event of labor, rupture of membranes, or an obstetrical emergency.
Can I continue to have sexual relations?
Yes, as long as it is not causing you to have pain or bleeding. For certain
problems, you may be told to avoid sex. Some women feel that sex is more
comfortable during pregnancy if they are on top or lying side to side.
If you have questions about sexual relations please ask a clinician during
any of your prenatal visits.
What about dental care?
Keep getting your regular dental check ups. Take good care of your teeth.
Let your dentist know that you are pregnant before any x-rays are taken
or any medicines are given to you.
Can I take tub baths?
Showers or tub baths are encouraged. No douching unless instructed to
do so. No hot tubs or saunas.
